Durango Colorado is located in the Southwestern corner of Colorado, at 6500 feet and with a population of a little over 17000 people Durango is a beautiful place to live. Founded in 1881 by the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad, the city was named after Durango Mexico which was named after Durango Spain. The name Durango came from the Basque word Urango or "Water Town". Durango Covers about 9 square miles and is located in the Animas River Basin surrounded by the San Juan Mountains.
The Animas River winds its way through Durango and offers Gold Medal fly fishing, Rafting, Kayaking, Canoing and Tubing.
Durango Mountain Resort is 25 minutes from Durango and offers epic skiing in the winter months and great summer activities. You can ride the Alpine Slide a summer bobsled experience, or climb the rock wall. Offering events like Music in the Mountains.
Fort Lewis College located on the Mesa east of Durango offers a great college experience with class schedule to accomedate even a working student. With a great student to professor ratio classes are smaller. Fort Lewis is located 15 minutes from Durango.
